Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

It has been 41 days since the first day of my last period. I have taken two home pregnancy tests, and both have come up negative. I am concerned with what is going on. I only track my period when I am trying to get pregnant. Two years ago, it took me two months to get pregnant with my son. In that time, my periods was between 32 and 33 days. My question is if there is a chance that I could be pregnant or not? Is it normal to go that long in between periods?

Forty-one days is generally considered an abnormally long cycle ( the range of "normal" being 21-34 days). If you have already taken two pregnancy tests and they are negative, then it is unlikely that you are pregnant, unless conception just happened within the last two weeks. You may have had an "anovulatory cycle" this time, which means a month in which you do not release an egg and can cause a delayed or skipped period. I would recommend you contact your gynecologist and review this information with him or her to determine if any further testing is needed at this time, or if a medication should be given to you to start your period now.
