Expert Q&A

By Lawrence B. Werlin
Fertility Specialist

I have two children, but since having them, I have been put on Atenelol for my high blood pressure. I have been on the medication for three years now. I was wondering if this is a drug that can be taken while pregnant and if not, how long should I discontinue taking it before I try to conceive?

There are various medications that can be used to treat high blood pressure in women trying to achieve a pregnancy. The most common is Aldomet. In an effort to find out other classifications of medications that may be used, I would recommend that you consult with a maternal fetal medicine specialist."
