Expert Q&A

I have a persistent acne problem, and am trying to get pregnant. I am currently on Retin-A and understand that I should look for an alternative. Are products with benzoyl peroxide safe?

Benzoyl peroxide is listed as Category C, meaning there are no good studies to prove the safety of benzoyl peroxide in pregnancy. Fortunately, pregnancy frequently causes acne to improve spontaneously, and treatment may not be needed. I would recommend stopping acne medications while trying to conceive, and seeing how the problem responds once pregnant.
