Expert Q&A

By Lawrence B. Werlin
Fertility Specialist

I have had a total of seven pregnancies with three children. University of Colorado tested me for infertility with all tests coming up fine. This was after three consecutive miscarriages. Should I request my new doctor prescribe Clomid or something similar to help me?

By definition, you have recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), which is defined as three or more spontaneous losses. There are a number of factors that play a role.

  1. The most common causes of RPL are usually genetic and usually as a result of the embryo being abnormal.
  2. Uterine abnormalities.
  3. Hormonal abnormalities, including low thyroid function, elevated prolactin and low progesterone to name a few.
  4. Immunological problems, including both autoimmune (i.e. antiphospholipid antibody syndrome [APA]) and alloimmune (i.e. lack of blocking antibodies).
  5. Infectious.

These are the most common factors that play a role. I would recommend that you follow up with your reproductive endocrinologist to ensure that the appropriate testing has been done. Good luck.
