Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

My husband's mother is part of three sets of twins, and my grandfather had sisters that were twins. What is the likelihood that I could conceive twins?

The genetics of twinning is poorly understood and is hard to quantify, although it is clear that individuals who have a history of twins in the family have an increased risk of conceiving twins. However, one statistic that may help in your particular situation is that if you are the daughter of a woman who is a dizygotic twin, then your chance of having twins is increased by two and a half times. Good luck, and remember the saying "Double Trouble!"
