Expert Q&A

By Lawrence B. Werlin
Fertility Specialist

I just had surgery and have invasive ductile carcinoma – fortunately not estrogen sensitive and fortunately smallish and not in the nodes. I have been told chemo is a likely/probable option. But at 36 years (just turned this month), I realize there is a risk to fertility. I have started the process for promoting eggs for harvesting, but am wondering if there is an advantage to preserving eggs vs. embryos in terms of later use?

At the present time, there is a significant difference in the ability to freeze and thaw embryos vs. eggs. Although one can freeze eggs, the ability to thaw and subsequently utilize them for fertilization is quite low. The technology is continually improving. However, if you have the choice to freeze embryos vs. eggs, I would recommend freezing your embryos."
