Expert Q&A

| By Lawrence B. Werlin Fertility Specialist | ||
I had a full-term stillbirth. The reason was inconclusive. Several months later, I had an 8-week miscarriage. Tests came back showing Trisomy 15 scary stuff. We are going for genetic testing and seeing a reproductive endocrinologist (RE), but I'm anxious. If one of us is a carrier for this disorder, will we ever be able to have a child? I'm 34, and this has been devastating."
Trisomy 15 is a random event that can occur. Both you and your husband may be completely normal. Aneuploidy is defined as when an embryo has either too many or not enough chromosomes (Trisomy 15 is an example of this). The nine most commonly affected chromosomes are numbers 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, X & Y. These are also more commonly seen in women with recurrent pregnancy loss. It is good that you are being evaluated by a genetic counselor and seeing an RE; this can only be beneficial."
