Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

I have hypothyroidism, just recently diagnosed. I am 24, ovulating, and my husband's SA was normal. We have been trying to conceive for two years with no help. Now we are charting and doing OPKs, alas nothing. My question is how severely does hypothyroidism affect fertility?

Corrected hypothyroidism with normal T4 and TSH levels should not affect your fertility, especially if you have confirmed that you are ovulatory. Uncorrected thyroid abnormalities can affect ovulation and may cause a higher chance of miscarriage. However, the fact that you have hypothyroidism may suggest that you are at higher risk for other autoimmune-based disorders, which could be affecting your fertility. As you have been trying now for two years without success, I would strongly recommend that you get an evaluation by your gynecologist or a reproductive endocrinologist. He or she could run more blood tests on you for autoimmune conditions and also confirm via an HSG study that your uterus and tubes are normal and patent.
