Expert Q&A

By Lisa Miller, CNM, JD

My husband and I are trying for a second child. I have regular 27-28 day cycles. Each month I know when I ovulate from the slight pain and the cervical mucus change. This month, the mucus is late and I have not felt the pain. I had the stomach flu last week and was wondering if that would delay or possible keep me from ovulating this month. Thanks."

Any illness can potentially alter your menstrual cycle, though it may not mean you have not ovulated. It may simply be that you did not get your usual physical signs of ovulation.

If your last period was light or unusual, it is also possible that you are already pregnant and therefore would not have signs of ovulation (you may want to do a home pregnancy test if this is the case).
