Expert Q&A

By Lawrence B. Werlin
Fertility Specialist

It probably is not common for the hopeful father-to-be to contact such a site, but here I am. My wife and I (she's 40, I'm 42) have a beautiful 23-month-old son, and we have been trying to conceive another for the past four to five months. We have been relying on a schedule for sex, which we have now become accustomed to calling "deposit night," based on the first day of her last period.

Is there a more fertility-conducive position than another? Does it help to ensure that the all important "deposit" doesn't mostly end up on a towel or sheet? Lastly, my wife suggests that it is harder to become pregnant the second time around. How can this be?

As women get older, their likelihood for a successful pregnancy decreases and their likelihood for a pregnancy loss – should they conceive – increases. My recommendation would be that you consider a consultation with a reproductive endocrinologist to address fertility issues.
