Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

My wife and I are trying for a second child, and we may have missed ovulation by a day. It has been 35 days now, and she took a test on the 33rd day (her cycle varies between 29-33 days), and it came back negative. With our first child, we had no problem with the same test. I have heard that stress can delay a period, and my wife has been stressing about being pregnant. First, how long should we wait before seeing a doctor? Second, if stress has delayed her period, will her next ovulation be around 14 days after it, or will it be 14 after her period should have normally started?

It is very hard to predict when a woman will ovulate ahead of time especially if her periods vary like your wife's. I would advise another pregnancy test at Day 40 if she still has not had a period. If it is negative, then stress may play a role, and it might help her to see her doctor to help her find ways to reduce stress, identify her ovulation peak and do an overall assessment of her fertility status to determine if other testing is warranted now.
