Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

I had a stillbirth at 22 1/2 weeks due to listeria. After two regular periods, we decided to start again last month. I was taking my BBT and was active the day before, of and after my ovulation, but I did not conceive. Do you think my body is not ready yet? What should I do? I did a preconception checkup all over again, and everything is OK. Do you think my stillbirth has anything to do with it?

No, I do not think the prior stillbirth or listeria infection affected your ability to get pregnant that cycle. You appropriately waited a few months to let the uterus and your cycles normalize before trying to conceive. Keep in mind that even when everything lines up (i.e. ovulation and intercourse), there still is only a .40 chance of conception with any given cycle. Just keep trying and be more relaxed about it. Anxiety is not helpful to the conception process. Worrying about the timing of pregnancy or about a recurrent pregnancy loss could increase your stress hormones (i.e. cortisol), which signal to the body that this is NOT a good time to get pregnant. Good luck!"
