Expert Q&A

By David L. Fay, M.D.
Family Physician
Associate Director, Waukesha Family Practice Residency Program

What are the chances of conceiving twins when my Mum's mother is a fraternal twin and we have six other sets of twins throughout both my husband's families and my own families?

Twins are either monozygotic (identical) or dizygotic (fraternal). Monozygotic twins occur in about 4 per 1000 births; this is relatively constant. Dizygotic twins occur in about 8 per 1000 births, but there is much more variability. Such things as race, age, and infertility drugs all affect the rate of twinning.

The incidence of twins in women who are themselves a twin is approximately 1 in 60. Fathers who are twins have twins themselves in about 1 of 125 births. There are not good data on the rate of twins in grandchildren of twins."
