Expert Q&A

By Michael D Benson, MD
Attending Physician, Highland Park Hospital, IL

How soon after pregnancy and delivery can a woman get pregnant again?

There is no scientific answer to this question. A psychiatrist I once asked suggested that from a psychological point of view, five years of spacing is probably ideal. Obviously, few couples take this view very seriously. In contrast, we always have a few mothers conceive within 90 days of birth (usually inadvertently) and they do just fine. It makes a certain amount of sense to wait at least six to 12 weeks after the birth before attempting to conceive again, but this is not a hard and fast rule."
