Expert Q&A

By David L. Fay, M.D.
Family Physician
Associate Director, Waukesha Family Practice Residency Program

Can a woman become pregnant during her period?

The answer to this question really depends upon the definition of a woman's "period." If one is speaking only of the monthly bleeding resulting from failure to fertilize an egg which has been shed by the ovary, then no pregnancy would be possible.

Unfortunately, not every monthly bleeding episode is caused by this phenomenon. If there are other reasons for the bleeding, then it is theoretically possible to become pregnant while having monthly bleeding, although it would be uncommon.
