Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

My husband and I are on the fourth month of trying for a baby. He has had a vasectomy reversal and is showing at least 40 million sperm. I am 37 years old and have had two pregnancies that ended in spontaneous abortion many years ago. We are discussing how much alcohol he can safely drink without compromising the health of our baby, when/if we get pregnant. He drinks about two drinks every day for one week, doesn't drink anything the next week and then drinks two drinks a day the next week. This is his pattern. We would like to know the latest scientific facts about what alcohol does to the male to risk having a low birth weight baby and what the real limits are."

His drinking will not affect the baby's birth weight, but it could affect his sperm count and sexual performance on the week that he drinks daily."
