Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

My daughter just had her second C-section and was told her uterus was still open from her first C-section. What does this mean?

She probably had a separation of the uterine wall in the location of her previous C-section scar. This condition can occur and cause no symptoms. In some cases the uterus will open so wide or suddenly that severe bleeding can occur or the baby or umbilical cord can start to slip through the opening. This condition, called "uterine rupture," is usually associated with the uterine contractions that occur in labor, and it can be catastrophic to the baby and mother. It is usually marked by severe pain over the site of the previous scar, vaginal bleeding and/or abnormalities noted in the baby's heart rate pattern. Luckily, with the type of uterine incision that most doctors perform when a C-section is done, the risk of this condition happening during labor in a subsequent pregnancy is less than 1 percent."
