Expert Q&A

We have a strong history of diabetes in our family. How can I ensure that my children, 2 and 7, and my husband and I are not at risk?
For Type I diabetes, there is little that can be done for prevention. This is an autoimmune disease, triggered by a variety of factors, including simple viral illnesses. That being said, there appears to be no prevention. With respect to Type II diabetes, weight control is the key to prevention. Portion control, healthy choices and frequent exercise are the best things to do.
