Expert Q&A

By David L. Fay, M.D.
Family Physician
Associate Director, Waukesha Family Practice Residency Program

I am a healthy mother of three. Between school, family responsibilities and keeping the kids safe and healthy, I haven't been to the gynecologist or to any other doctor since my youngest was born three years ago. Do adults need well checks?

It depends on what you mean by "need." The purpose of well checks is to find problems in the earliest stage possible to make treatment and recovery easier. For younger women, the most important part of well checks is to prevent cervical cancer by doing pap smears. The bottom line is that regular well checks are not necessary, but they are a good idea.
