Expert Q&A

By David L. Fay, M.D.
Family Physician
Associate Director, Waukesha Family Practice Residency Program

I exercise three days a week and don't eat fast food more than once a week, but my doctor says my cholesterol is high. How can this be?

Genes. The liver makes cholesterol, and although the production is related to diet and exercise, it is most affected by genetic makeup. Those with high cholesterol usually can find family members with high cholesterol as well. Lowering cholesterol requires a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet and exercise. Unfortunately, it also often requires medication.
