Expert Q&A

By Craig Sweet, M.D.
Reproductive Endocrinologist

My cycles are all over the board, but for the most part, I am having a 25-day cycle. I am having a period each month where I think I am ovulating – increase in mucous, tenderness in my abdomen, etc. But often times that is ocurring just days after my period ends. Is it possible to be ovulating so early in my cycle since I have a short cycle to begin with?

Not sure what "All over the board" means. Normal cycles will range from 21 to 35 days. In general, however, a women will usually ovulate about 14 days before she has menstrual flow. In a normal 28 days cycle (few women actually have this), a woman is expected to ovulate on Day 14. With a 25-day cycle, ovulation would be expected earlier closer to Day 11. Starting relations perhaps closer to Day 8 or 9 may be suggested.

Good luck, and still keep the romance and passion in your relationship as best as you can! It's not a job – it's an ADVENTURE!
