Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

There's a debate among doctors I've talked to in regard to cervix size and how if affects the ability to get pregnant. I've been told I have a "tiny" cervix. I was also told by one doctor that it would not cause problems conceiving, yet another told me that it may. Then another doctor said that it was not the size of my cervix that mattered but the size of my uterus instead. What's the real story on this?

I don't know that there is a definitive answer to this question. I don't believe I've personally seen any data on cervical size in relation to fertility issues. I would not expect the size of the cervix would hinder fertility unless it is a reflection of some other problem, i.e. an underdeveloped genital system (which can occur in certain chromosomal syndromes). Or perhaps the doctor meant that the opening to the cervix is small or constricted. This condition, known as cervical stenosis, if severe, may contribute to infertility."
