I had my first doctor appointment. I am currently 6 and a half weeks pregnant! I didn’t realize how worried I would be that something would be wrong or go wrong. But my wonderful doctor put my mind at ease about all that.
I have found out that it is normal to have weird feelings in your abdomen, especially in your first pregnancy. I have been having a weird sensation on my right side -- not a pain, but a "feeling." The doctor checked that area and said there is nothing there. Most often you have some funny feelings due the stretching of your uterus and the ligaments attached to it. Also, the intestines don’t like pregnancies much and start behaving unusually and that can cause funny feelings too. So, I feel better about all that. I have not been sick (knock on wood) and the doctor said there is no reason for me to think I must be sick in order for this pregnancy to be a healthy one. Many women are not sick, so I just hope I am one of them!
They start recommending genetics counseling at age 35. The doctor said they had to pick an age, and 35 is it. Problems really start increasing at 37 and after, though. So, at my next appointment I will be put in touch with genetic counselors to go over the pros and cons of having an amniocentesis. The doctor said I should only be "slightly" concerned, as there are no genetic disorders on either my side or DH’s side of the family. But it is still something to think about. I guess you have until the 14th week to do this, so we have some time. I don’t know a whole lot about this subject so I will have to start doing some investigating.
Not much else happened at the first appointment. I gave five vials of blood -- it’s a wonder I’m still strong enough to type this entry (ha, ha). The next appointment is a month away and we will see if we can get a heartbeat at that appointment. I can’t wait!
This is my last entry here at the preconception.com diaries. It has been a wonderful experience! I have met so many nice people and there is so much support here. I extend the biggest shower of baby dust possible to all the diary writers. May you all graduate to the pregnancy boards soon!! And to all the readers, thank you for your support, encouragement and advice. I have learned so much from all of you! I strongly suggest to those of you reading to join in and become a writer. You will really like it!
I will still be around! I will be checking up on all of you to see what adventures are going on in your lives, and the news of lots more +++ HPT.
Best of luck to everyone!
Jenny W
