September 17, 2003

Hello everyone from Storm Watch 2003! Having never been through a hurricane this is a new and exciting experience for me. I think the closest I’ve ever been to a hurricane is the town in southern Utah named that, but pronounced a lot different than normal. They say it like “huricun”. Anyway, Hurricane Isabel is supposed to hit in North Carolina, and then move up the land and strike us Thursday and Friday. I have been watching the news about it and everyone seems so worried as they talk about it. Having never been through a hurricane before, I really don’t know what to expect. Lots of rain, high winds, but that’s can’t be as bad as everyone makes it out to be, right? I mean, what’s a little water and wind? I guess I’ll know in a few days. Anyone out there want to share their hurricane story with me to educate the poor westerner? :)

Although I don’t understand the nature of the storm, I do understand being prepared for whatever comes. I figure I’ll make sure we have a bunch of water, do some last minute cleaning and laundry today, and prepare for the power to go out. We have plenty of batteries and a little camp stove with Ramen Noodles so I figure we’re set for awhile. I’m just curious on how long the power will go out for, if ever. I intend to park my car a little bit away from trees (can you get away from them here?) since it’s been hit by a tree once before and I’d like to keep it tree free this storm. What else can I do?

Okay, I’m sure you’re wondering why my car has been hit by a tree before. Well, my junior year in college I lived in an apartment with huge trees lining the road. I parked under them one night in spring when the weather was nice and warm. Well, overnight things got cold and froze. The weight of the ice and snow on the newly thawed trees tends to break them off. It comes with a strange popping noise. Anyway, I got woken up early in the morning by my next door neighbor yelling that my car had been hit by a tree. What? A tree? So I walk out there to look at it and sure enough, a huge branch hit my car and the other cars next to it. This branch must have weighed about 50 lbs and was about 6 feet long. So, being the good apartment dweller that I am, I took pictures and called my apartment management. Sure I could have lifted it off myself but I wanted them to see it because it had dented my front hood pretty bad. So as the maintenance guy comes out and looks at it and lifts the branch off. I inform him that I’m going to be contacting my insurance with the pictures and if they aren’t willing to fix it, then they, as property owners, need to be prepared to fix it. Turns out the insurance covered it but it prompted a flier around our apt complex about how they were not responsible for any damage taken from the trees around the property. Anyway, that’s my tree story.

Oh! If you haven’t read my ttm board, AF came right on time for me last week. So on to cycle #13. 13 is my lucky number so maybe something will come of it? I’ve been looking around at different infertility clinics just to start learning about different ones. I’ve decided on 2 so far, but I think 2 is enough, really. Now to get jobs and have actual insurance to cover this. But until then, I just keep taking my herbs and vitamins and I’m back to taking my temp every morning. Maybe I won’t need to go to the clinics! :)

Jeff is sick with a cold and I seem to be catching it too. I was really hoping to miss out on whatever he has but it doesn’t seem to want to pass me by. I don’t have it as bad as he does. Hopefully we’ll be better by next week since we’ve got some work to do! :)

Speaking of work, still no jobs in our future. Jeff hopefully has an interview sometime this week but he’s having a hard time getting a hold of his contact. I’ll keep you updated.

Last week I saw a truck driving around spraying clouds out of the bed of the truck. I’m hoping this was spraying for mosquitoes because I’d hate for them to be spraying for anything else! Like giant cockroaches or spiders or something.

Last weekend was my birthday. I’m now 23! Yay! I think this is my 2nd birthday ttc. We went camping with our ward last weekend. It was a lot of fun but very rainy. We had dinner and played a few games before we went to the covered pavilion and danced the Virigina Reel. The kids were having such a good time and Jeff and I had a great time too! We love to dance. Anyway, I guess we’re used to camping in the mountains because we were unprepared at how hot and muggy it was going to be at night. Ugh. We couldn’t sleep at all. And there were mice in our cabin so that was entertaining. We did find a bunch of salamanders and frogs and a few snakes (outside our cabin, thank goodness!) and the kids had a hey day with that. We left early on Saturday morning because we didn’t get hardly any sleep and I wanted to go to Mt. Vernon for my birthday.

After sleeping for a few hours, we went to the Fall Festival at Mt. Vernon. It was so much fun! They had a bunch of tents set out to sell stuff, and they also had a sword swallower, a traveling medicine man, George Washington, and the militia who shoot their guns every hour. It was very cool to see everyone dressed up in the old time clothes and see the wandering rat catcher and the town drunk, etc. I had a really good time and Jeff bought me a birthday present of the Game of Graces. It’s like Frisbee but with wooden hoops and 2 sticks. It’s a lot of fun and I’m hoping we get a chance to play it soon.

When we got home, I walked in our hall to get to our apt and I kept hearing this tinny music playing. I went to go get the mail and the music was getting stronger. As I opened my mail box, I heard Happy Birthday playing from one of my cards. It made me laugh and after I opened the card, I couldn’t get it to stop! The poor mail man. I’m sure he was happy to get rid of that card! It was from my Nana. :) It’s nice to be remembered on your birthday. Thanks to all who gave me birthday wishes on my ttm board! It was a great birthday.

Congrats to Jackie on her pg!! That’s so wonderful!
