August 6, 2004
The IUI went great. No complications, nothing. It wasn't as cool as the last time, because I didn't get to use the awesome ultrasound machine. They didn't even scan me to see if I've ovulated or what! I was a little bummed, but oh well. Sharon was the nurse who did my IUI this time and hopefully it will take. I'm testing on Friday, August 13th (hopefully a LUCKY day for me!) and we'll see how things go from there.
Right before we left on vacation, Jeff and I had a serious talk about this whole baby making business. I was so stressed out about it, and it didn't help that when I told Jeff I was ovulating, he said, "What, now?!" He explained that he was kind of hoping to bring home a "souvenir" of West Virginia and that's why he was caught a little off guard. But my first reaction was that I was sorry for putting him off! I mean, at least I'm ovulating now, which was always kind of iffy in the past! So, because of this, we had a long discussion about where to go in our treatment. Basically, because I'm so stressed over this, we decided to do one more IUI and then take a little break. I know that Dr. K will want us to do IUI with injections next and I just don't want to go that route. So after the next IUI, we're taking a break for about 6 months to get all of our finances together and then going strait to the IVF. Yes, it's a lot more invasive and expensive, but we just don't have the money to be monitored for an IUI. And, if we do go the IVF route, I'm quitting my job. It's really stressful sometimes and I seriously just don't want to do it. So I figure if I'm not working, then I can focus on being relaxed to help the IVF process go a little more smoothly.
This plan made me feel a little bit better, but not good enough to be prepared for the little old lady next door to us showing up. We've talked to her before just in passing and she is very nice. She came over to offer her services when I go back to work after the baby is born. What the...?! I was so floored as to why she would even suggest that! I handled it well, laughed it off while she was there, and cried my eyes out to Jeff seconds later. Jeff looked a little sheepish and told me he told her we were trying. The nerve. I swear that boy tells everyone and their grandmother that we're trying. I'd rather not have everyone know about this. Hopefully now he'll stop!
I was so glad to get away and go to West Virginia for our anniversary! We left Sunday afternoon and had a pleasant 3 hour drive or so to Davis, West Virginia. That's where Blackwater Falls State Park is. We stayed in the lodge at the park and it was so peaceful. We had a great view, although we got 2 beds, a full and a twin so we crammed into the full. It was okay. The lodge had a really nice restaurant that we ate at the whole time we were there, and we just relaxed. We swam in the pool, sat in the hot tub, did a lot of hiking and took a lot of naps. It was fantastic. On Monday, we wandered down to the falls, and hiked around there for a while. Then we decided to take a short hike to another set of falls closer to the lodge. You could walk right over these falls. They were beautiful. And yes, the water does look very dark. We decided to go exploring from those falls and just hiked the rest of that day. It felt really good to be out in the woods and away from people!
The next day we got up early to make sure that we were on time for our horseback riding. I was so excited to do this because it's been a long time since I've ridden. I was a little disappointed in the ride, though. Especially the people that were handling the horses. I wanted to wear a helmet because I think it's safer, and the helmets they brought out were old, cracking, and really good for nothing. We were standing behind the fence like they asked us to, and they started to bring all the other riders back, not looking at us. Finally, when everyone was mounted, they looked at us and asked us if we're ready. I told them no, we needed helmets, and they huffed a little and brought out a ton of old, icky helmets. I was about ready to bag the helmets but I found fairly deceit ones for me and Jeff and off we go to the horses.
They put me and Jeff on the shortest ones (an irk of mine, since we're both over 6'and I hate riding short horses.) and off we go down the trail. My reins were twisted and knotted. I spent the first half of the ride untwisting them and making them lay nicely. My horse was an appaloosa (spotted), mostly white horse named Pepper. Jeff rode a brown horse named Charlie. Basically we plodded through the forest, and turned around in the most inconvenient spot under some trees. The branches scraped everyone but Jeff, the guide, and me. I was a little astonished that that was where they asked us to turn around because 3 feet down the trail was a nice open grassy spot we could have turned around a lot easier. By now, I'm thinking I could run this a lot better than they are. But oh well. It was nice to be able to ride again. I miss it.
We tried to go boating the lake but there was a high concentration of bacteria so they closed the lake. Oh well. We had a good time anyway.
After the horseback riding we took a hike to Balanced Rock, which is a rock on another rock deep in the forest. It was a nice hike, but a little wet. We had to skirt around a lot of bogs. And it's dark in the forest! We walked through a little meadow and it was so bright in comparison of the forest.
We left early in the morning on Wednesday and drove around West Virginia for a bit. We saw the headwaters of the Potomac River, and found a very cute little maple syrup store where they make their own stuff! It's fantastic fresh. We also drove down to Berkley Springs, which is a spa town with natural springs. They say it's the oldest spa in the US. It was a cute little town and we waded in the springs for a bit but didn't stay long. We saw George Washington's bathtub, though! That was cool.
When we got home, we couldn't wait to see the puppy and we dumped our stuff off at home and went to go get her. She was so happy to see us and followed us around the house the whole evening. What a cutie.
In any case, congrats on getting down this far! Hope you enjoyed it. I plan on testing next Friday, if AF stays away that long!
