Catherine's Diary Entries

July 9, 2004

Wahoo! IUI! I was surprised to get a positive opk on the evening of the 3rd, and I had the IUI on the 4th! What a day for it. I was also so excited because on the morning of the 4th, I got a peak reading on my monitor. It really does work! And it just saved me a call to their help line.

It all started on the 3rd, with me coming out of the bathroom holding the test and I gave it to Jeff. He’s been very interested in everything that’s going on this cycle so he wanted to be involved with the opks too. He’s getting as good at reading those things as I am! We kind of hemmed and hawed over the test, because it was right on the edge of being positive. We decided that we would call it a positive and I knew we would be doing an IUI on the 4th. Since the 4th was a Sunday, I knew I would have to find a substitute for my new sunbeam class. So I started calling frantically around to the few people I know at my church and all I got were voice mails. So, I left messages and went to bed. I did not sleep very well that night because I was pretty excited about going in. Plus, I wanted to make sure that I got up early enough to let the nurses know about the IUI that morning.

When I talked to the nurse the morning of the 4th, and she told me that Jeff had to be there at 11am to do his thing, and I needed to be at the office at 1 for my part. (I did finally get a hold of someone at church to cover my class for me, thank goodness!) I figured since we only have one car, we would just go down and hang out in the area in between and Jeff could come to the procedure with me.

Anyway, we showed up in the middle of a huge rainstorm, and Jeff did his thing and we found a nice quiet, comfy place and played Zoo Tycoon on our laptop. (That is a great game, by the way. We’ve really enjoyed it!) Then, around 1pm, we wandered over to the office and checked in. The receptionist was very happy, very excited for us and she said that she had a good feeling about it. (Man I hope so!) She led us up to the second floor and let us wait in the little waiting room out there. And we waited and we waited and we waited…Probably for about an hour or so. It was okay, because Jeff and I mainly talked about stuff, joked around and looked in the couch for change (hey, we were bored! Didn’t find anything though. ;) )

Finally, we did see a lab tech go zipping past us with a little blue cooler and they called us in the back. The Nurse Practitioner, Anne, was doing the procedure for us and she is a very sweet and nice lady! We talked about what’s going to happen, showed us the straw of sperm and put it in the warmer. She then had me undress from the waist down, and then we waited some more. At that point, I got a little annoyed, especially since now I’m in my skivvies, shivering in the cold room! She only gave me a little paper drape, not one of the nice cloth ones I hoped she would give me.

Anyway, she finally came back in; I got into position on the table, and she started my sonogram. I have never had a sonogram before, and I always thought that my first one would be when I was pregnant. Oh well. She checked my bladder, pointed it out to us on the screen and then checked my ovaries. I had 2 nice big follicles, and 2 others that look like they may catch up in time. Anne said that it looked perfect, just what they wanted to see and proceeded to prep me for the procedure.
Now, remember that Jeff is sitting at my head the whole time, just watching. Anne pulls over a table with all the instruments in them and I see him go a little white. She picked up the speculum and he turns to me and says, “I’m glad you didn’t have to see that!” I just chuckled…if only he knew what us women have to go through!

Anyway, we watched the whole thing through the sonogram and she showed us where the catheter was and the bright spot of the sperm coming out. In about 2 minutes she was done! She pulled everything out and the table tips up so we can use gravity to help move things along. So here I am, basically sitting on my head and shoulders, my tush flapping in the breeze and a huge rainstorm raging outside. Jeff and I spent about 20 minutes talking about our future kid and names and when I would be due, etc. Hopeful thinking. :)

Anne came back in after 20 minutes and brought me down and gave us a little picture of the sonogram with the sperm coming out and she had put a little arrow to it and put “Go Baby!” on it. Very cute.

She told me that I need to take a pregnancy test in 2 weeks (imagine, being told that I HAVE to take a test!) and call with the results. So the 18th is the test day, and we’ll see what happens then.

Other than that, not much else has been happening here. Just work and home and work and home. I’ll update more later!

Always-
~Cat
