Try, Try Again

What to Expect from Your Second Attempt at In Vitro Fertilization

Consulting with the medical staff before going in for a second attempt can offer new insight into what to expect, what changes to make and what the improved chances are for a better result. "There are many things that a couple can discuss with their doctor to help ease them into a second attempt," says Dr. Richard-Davis. "For example, couples may wish to know or find out what the number of eggs retrieved was, what the fertilization rate was, what the quality of eggs and embryos were, etc. These things can help in determining whether there is anything to be done to improve chances of conception with a second try."

A second attempt at IVF can offer a whole new set of emotions, feelings, worries and stressors. However, just as with the first try, Dr. Richard-Davis says it is important to remember what you've done in the past to make it through difficult times. It may be just what you need to help you now.

"Find time to have fun, read books, do nice things for yourself, buy things, meet new people, take exciting classes," says Dr. Richard-Davis. "Learn to do something you've always been afraid to try. Use this time to develop deeper and more intimate relationships with your partner and others you care for. Go for counseling, join a support group, get online or do anything else your heart desires. You deserve it! This will only help you regardless of how many attempts you have to make."
