The Art of ART
All About Assisted Reproductive Technology
By Teri Brown
"Thankfully, the severe form of OHSS occurs in only 1 to 2 percent of cases and can be successfully treated with conservative measures like intravenous fluids and pain medications," Dr. Miller says.
Pregnancy rates for all non-IVF or ICSI procedures are difficult to assess due to the paucity of cycles that are still performed in the United States.
"It should be pointed out that it is very difficult to compare success rates between clinics due to variation in patient populations and different treatment approaches," Dr. Miller says. "This seems especially true for states where insurance coverage for ART is mandated. Given the removal of the significant financial burden of an ART cycle, it is realistic to think that patients in mandated states may be offered IVF earlier in the course of their fertility treatment than someone who would have to pay all expenses out of pocket."
Assisted reproduction technology doesn't have to be overwhelming. Good fertility clinics often have counselors trained to help you make sense of all your options. Take advantage of them. You can also find a local or online support group. Talking to people who are familiar with the process is invaluable.
The Internet is an easy and common resource for ART information. Just remember to check out the sources to make sure they are reputable. Information from trusted sources, like the information in this article, will help you make your way through the often confusing road to conception.
