Obtaining New or Revised Policies

"If you do not have health insurance and are in the market for an individual plan, then be sure to ask if the plan will cover services for infertility and sexual dysfunction," Grater says. "Some plans may cover up to a certain dollar amount, and some plans may not cover these services at all." Use the sample letter outlined in this article to determine which questions to ask when shopping for a new insurance policy.

RESOLVE works to support women in obtaining infertility coverage through their employer, Collura says. The organization has teamed up with Conceive Magazine to recognize the top employers for fertility friendly benefits, including adoption and infertility insurance coverage for women.

In a fascinating survey RESOLVE commissioned in 2006, it was revealed that 65 percent of companies that offer infertility health care coverage do so because an employee simply asked for it, Collura says. With those survey results, she encourages women to write a letter to their employer (a sample can be found on the RESOLVE Web site).

"As simple as it may sound, we have heard many amazing success stories from women doing this," Collura says, adding that you can go a step further and contact your state and federal legislators to support legislation that would require insurance coverage for infertility treatment (The Family Building Act at the federal level).
