Infertility Insurance Coverage

Basics Tips When You're Trying to Conceive

"A woman should contact her insurance company to predetermine her benefits to identify coverage for infertility treatments, as well as pharmaceutical benefits," says JoAnne Brian, director of practice development for Reproductive Science Center (RSC) of the Bay Area, San Ramon, Calif.

Again, look into what help your healthcare facility or insurance company may offer you. RSC offers its patients a sample letter to insurance companies for patients to use to clarify what infertility benefits are covered, Brian says. It includes nine questions they should ask their insurance companies. The letter requests the following information to be confirmed in writing:

  1. Do I have infertility benefits under my current insurance company?
  2. Do I have diagnostic infertility coverage allowing the physician to find the cause of my infertility problem?
  3. Do I have infertility treatment coverage allowing the physician to perform intrauterine insemination (IUI)?
  4. Do I have infertility treatment coverage for in vitro fertilization (IVF)? Does this coverage include cryopreservation, intracytoplasmic sperm injection and/or frozen embryo transfer?
  5. If yes, does my policy require prior authoriation for these procedures?
