Coping in a Fertile World
Tips for Handling Other People's Pregnancies
By Beth Hering
While some women feel that they should be able to handle things on their own, Mendell urges them to seek professional help if needed. "Why not make it easier?" she says, noting that counseling can provide a guilt-free environment in which to talk and that therapists can help normalize feelings. Professionals also can be a rich source of information on everything from the effect of hormones on emotions to strategies for developing a Plan B if a couple's current infertility treatment does not work – and knowledge can bring both hope and power.
With "happy families everywhere," it may be incredibly hard not to continually feel the loss of not becoming a member of the club of parents. But Dr. Galst recommends trying.
"Be kind and compassionate with yourself as you go through this experience," she says. "Find some way to pamper yourself. Get away for a weekend, take a yoga class, take a brief vacation from infertility treatment if appropriate and maintain good eating and sleeping habits. Get involved and engaged in something, which brings you a feeling of accomplishment, such as a hobby, volunteer work or learning a new skill."
Perhaps the title of one blog sums it up best: I Am More Than My Infertility. Remembering your own worth can help make things easier now and can give you a solid foundation for whatever the future may hold.
