Big City vs. Local Fertility Treatments
Which Fertility Clinic Is Your Best Bet for Pregnancy?
By Teri Brown
When it comes to managing their fertility, many couples face more questions than answers. One of the most perplexing questions: "Where should I get my fertility help – with my local OB/GYN or at a big city fertility clinic?" The answer may be even more complicated than the question.
Rachel Gurevich, who recently moved from the United States to Israel, is facing that same question. A mother of two, Gurevich is now having difficulties getting pregnant and is looking for answers.
"Some people say going to your OB/GYN for fertility help is a waste of time, and that given the long waiting lists for fertility clinics and treatment, it's best to go straight for the fertility clinic," Gurevich says. "I don't see why people shouldn't try to do both at once – get on the waiting lists for an evaluation, and in the meantime, see what your own OB/GYN can do for you. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones who gets pregnant after a round of two of Clomid. But I do think getting an appointment with a fertility clinic as soon as you know you're having a problem is important."
Gurevich saw her regular doctor, but also went the specialist route and discovered she had some issues. She says that while her regular doctor tried to help, she wasn't as up-to-date with Gurevich's particular situation.
Dr. Bobby W. Webster is a practice director for A Woman's Center for Reproductive Medicine in Baton Rouge, La. He was a general OB/GYN, working with some infertility patients for five years before going back for more formal training in the subspecialty field of reproductive endocrinology.
