An At-Home "Sample"
Testing for Sperm Concentration in the Privacy of Your Home
By Lyn Mettler
The FertilMARQ test is not for everyone, but it can benefit some couples. Dr. Morgentaler recommends the test for couples who aren't ready to start infertility testing, but who want to gain some control over the process. "It's a first step. It's an easy thing to do," he says. "It doesn't replace the doctor. It just gives you some guidance." But, he cautions, "Even if a test is normal, that is by no means a guarantee that a man's sperm is normal."
Dr. Morris recommends it for couples who are just starting to try to conceive. "I would not recommend it for couples who have already tried for [six months if the female is older than 37 or one year otherwise] in lieu of real semen analysis testing," he says.
"FertilMARQ was a good first step for us as we approached the one-year mark of trying to conceive," says Burns. "Our insurance doesn't cover infertility treatments, and this was a low-cost way to allow us to start getting some answers."
