Become an Ovulation Detective
10 Ways to Know You're Fertile
By Teri Brown
"The drawback to BBT monitoring is that once a woman's temperature rises, she has already ovulated; thus if she has not yet had intercourse, it would probably be too late to conceive in that cycle," Dr. Levi says. "Couples need to have intercourse before ovulation occurs to have the best chance of conceiving. Once the egg is released, it is often too late for the sperm to reach the egg if the sperm is not already waiting in the fallopian tube."
Dr. Levi suggests that perhaps the easiest and most practical way a woman can detect ovulation is to purchase an ovulation predictor kit (OPK). OPKs can detect rises in certain hormone concentrations that occur just prior to ovulation (OPKs rely upon these hormones being present in the urine) and can be used to accurately time intercourse to maximize a woman's chances of conceiving in a given month.
For women looking to get pregnant, ovulation is the most important time of the month. Detecting when that time is takes a bit of sleuthing, but with the following signs and tips, you too can become an ovulation detective.
- The "Regular" Menstrual Cycle: Generally speaking, ovulation occurs 14 days prior to the first day of the next menstrual cycle. For women that have no physical signs of ovulation, ovulation predictor kits, which test the urine for a hormone (LH) secreted prior to ovulation, can be used.

Never thought of tracking my fertility. May buy an ovulation prediction test tomorrow. Thanks for the mind-opening article. Needed someone to wake me up. Not getting pregnant when you want to is a very depressing thing. Thx.
