Breaking Fertility News
Today's Research Is Tomorrow's Treatments
By Teri Brown
"The inability to reliably identify the embryos most likely to produce a healthy baby is the primary reason why most IVF practitioners have tended to transfer numerous embryos at a time to the uterus," Dr. Sher says. "Albeit well intended, this has led to a veritable explosion in the incidence of IVF-related multiple births with serious medical, social and financial consequences."
Researchers are moving closer to being able to successfully transfer a uterus from a donor to a woman. Dr. Giuseppe Del Priore and Dr. Jeanetta Stega are heading up the project at the New York Downtown Hospital and giving hope to women who are unable to have their own children due to uterus removal. Though the research looks promising, the hospital's press department is quick to point out that they are nowhere near the actual transplant stage. In a recently released statement, Bruce D. Logan, president and chief executive officer for New York Downtown Hospital, says the hospital is proud to support Dr. Del Priore's ground-breaking research. "The hospital's intention in supporting this work is to help further research in this area of medicine; we do not expect to perform a human uterine transplant at the hospital any time in the near future," he says. "Every step in this long research process must be handled in a measured, prudent manner. Our first concern is always the safety of our patients."
