Healthy Eating During Preconception
Good Nutrition While You're Trying to Conceive
By Alison Gamble
You may want to take a prenatal vitamin to help cover your nutrient bases. Keep in mind that in the first trimester you do not need any extra calories. You need to focus on getting a variety of nutrients from the food groups. During the second and third trimester is when you should add 300 calories per day to your diet. That isn't much; for example, it is only a bagel with a piece of fruit and an eight-ounce glass of skim milk. Realize that every woman is different and your needs will vary depending on your age, activity and lifestyle.
Planning a pregnancy is a great opportunity to begin a healthy lifestyle, or to improve your existing healthy habits. You should adopt realistic habits – ones you will feel comfortable teaching your future children. I highly recommend quitting smoking, as well as limiting or eliminating alcohol from your diet. I do not believe in drinking while pregnant at all. I think it is too risky to jeopardize the health of your fetus.
You have the greatest gift in the world: to create another living being. Cherish that and treat this gift (your unborn child) with the respect it deserves! Good luck!
