"In IVF [in vitro fertilization], for the first two weeks there is something going on virtually every day leading up to the big moment of the transfer," Leonard says. "As part of that activity, most women see a doctor or nurse every day. Then everything stops. They go from all of that activity to just waiting and there's nothing concrete they can do to guarantee success. It's not unusual for patients to describe a sense of powerlessness."

Passing the Time
Shako finds a great comfort in the forums she frequents during the two-week wait. Leonard says that sense of community may help some people, but, especially for those who are new to the trying-to-conceive journey or to fertility treatments, they can be very discouraging. "Some blogs and forums can be useful, but if you think about who's blogging and posting, it's those women who are failing in their quest for pregnancy," Leonard says. "The ones it works for aren't there any longer. A person who is just beginning can't take on other people's situations as being hers and get anxious about it. You're in a whole different place even though the feelings are similar."

Instead, Leonard likes activities that focus on the quest to become pregnant, but in a more positive, nurturing manner that are specific toconception. Take these suggestions, for example:
