You've Had a Miscarriage
Taking Steps to Reduce the Risk of Miscarrying Again
By Dr. Henry Lerner, OB/GYN
What are some of these "changes" you can make to reduce your risk of having a miscarriage the next time you conceive?
- Get to know more about your family medical and genetic history. Learn what conditions, if any, run in your family.
- Make sure you are immunized against communicable diseases such as German measles and chickenpox.
- Avoid exposure to infectious diseases such as Lyme disease, toxoplasmosis (contact with cat litter boxes, eating raw meat) and cytomegalovirus.
- If you have had several miscarriages, have yourself checked for the possibility that there are anatomic abnormalities in your uterus or other reproductive organs.
- Similarly, if you have had several miscarriages, make sure that your body is making sufficient levels of reproductive hormones to be able to sustain an early pregnancy.

I agree with what Anonymous said about the last sentence. I am sitting in my living room dealing with miscarrying at 20 weeks about a week ago. I feel like I have to get through the first three months...THEN I have to get through to 20 weeks at least to make myself feel safe.

The last sentence in this article needs to be rewritten. It is not a true statement. Just because you make it past the 20 week mark does not ensure you will go home with a baby...

Thank-you for such a thought provoking article, I also want to add that this article is also useful in providing an overview of resources for dealing with pregnancy loss: http://www.yoyobelly.ca/2009/04/02/pregnancy-loss/
