Chemical Pregnancy and Blighted Ovum
The Role of Blighted Ovum and Chemical Pregnancy in Miscarriages
By Laurie Dove
"When the doctor couldn't hear a heartbeat at what we thought was about 10 weeks, he grew concerned and bluntly told me I wasn't pregnant," she says.
An ultrasound confirmed that she wasn't pregnant. Weeks earlier, an egg was fertilized and caused a shift in hormones. This hormonal change was barely detected by the two pregnancy tests and by the time the fertilized egg failed to develop and implant, Lay's body was mimicking pregnancy symptoms, including a missed period.
"[My doctor] said it may have been a combination of my mind wanting it so desperately, telling my body to have the symptoms and hormone changes," she says. "Physically, I went through nausea and sore breasts ... I thought I was having a good pregnancy.
"Emotionally, when I learned it wasn't true, it was as if I'd lost a child," she says. "My husband and I were both devastated with people saying, 'Well, at least it wasn't a real baby.'"
Neither Lay nor Sherwood are alone. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a majority of pregnancies never go past the first few crucial weeks. Even after a clinical diagnosis of pregnancy, there's still about a 25 percent chance of miscarriage.

This was an odd article about chemical pregnancies. They made it out to sound as if chemical pregnancies aren't "real" pregnancies. There are many better, more accurate articles out there on this subject.
