Planning a High Risk Pregnancy

A Pregnancy Plan

Besides coping with worry, women with high-risk pregnancies sometimes have to make frustrating sacrifices. After suffering a miscarriage and then losing a premature baby, Sheri Goeser Stritof of Ocean Park, Wash. was placed on complete bedrest for 9 months with her fifth, sixth and seventh pregnancies. "Staying in bed for 9 months made me long for walks outdoors," Stritof says. "I also missed some of our older sons' school events, and during my last two pregnancies I didn't think I was being the mom to our toddlers that I should have been." Once again, Bittle recommends finding a sympathetic ear and discussing frustrations.

Secrets to Success

Reno offers several tips for women planning a high-risk pregnancy. "Find good doctors. They will become your salvation if you have problems," she says. "Also, make sure you do what you are told, but always question what you don't understand. Finally, choose to deliver your baby at a hospital with the facilities to care for a premature baby."

Dr. Tabsh adds that it's important to verify insurance coverage prior to pregnancy. "Some premature babies end up costing hundreds of thousands of dollars or even millions. Make sure you're covered in case of pregnancy complications," he says.

Happily, Monson is now the proud mom of a 4-month-old daughter. And Reno and FitzSimmons say the stress they suffered during pregnancy was well worth it. "My son was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen," Reno says. "He is the best thing I have ever done in my life!"
