Robotic Myomectomy
Could Robotic Surgery Help You Conceive?
By Teri Brown
The benefits of robotics over traditional surgical approaches include the following:
- Shorter hospital stay
- Less pain
- Less risk of wound infection
- Less blood loss and need for blood transfusions
- Less scarring
- Faster recovery and quicker return to normal activities
Dr. Fred Howard, associate chair and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, agrees that the benefits of robotic myomectomy as compared to traditional surgery are numerous. "Usually patients who have a robotic myomectomy have the procedure as an outpatient and recovery is generally one to two weeks," he says. "The major benefits are an improved cosmetic result and the much faster recovery when compared to a laparotomy for myomectomy."
As the technology becomes readily available, more and more surgeons will train to perform the surgery, making it easier for women who suffer from uterine myomas to conceive and carry a baby to term. "An experienced laparoscopic surgeon can be prepared for robotic surgery in about two to three months," Dr. Howard says. "The learning curve is much greater if the surgeon is not already skilled in laparoscopy."
Soon, robotic surgeries will become more common, and will give hope to other women like Earnestine Tucker, who just want to have and hold their own baby.
