In Search of the Perfect Family

nd and I had a conversation. I was seriously considering having my tubes tied. I felt blessed to have two healthy, wonderful children and saw no need to further expand our family. Furthermore, I was an experienced mom. I had been through it all up to age 5. It was my daughter's first year of school which proved to be a lot busier and altogether overwhelming than I had originally thought. I had the benefit of five years of mothering experience. All logistics aside, I found motherhood to be an intense emotional experience and I doubted my ability to give myself fully, as I believe a mother should, to more than two children. Once again, my bewildered husband (I seem to have that effect on him) talked me down.
He argued I was too young to have my tubes tied, too young to make such a life-altering decision about my body, that he wasn't ready to call it quits just yet. I was surprised yet quite honestly flattered by his resolve.
So often it is the woman in the marriage who is the driving force behind family planning. Heck, some women don't even give their husbands a say in the matter. We've all heard stories of pregnancies used as a last ditch effort to save marriages, women practically collecting children to fill some empty void, and as aforementioned, women who have that magic number in their heads completely disregarding their husband's wishes.
Forgive me for being overjoyed at sitting across from the man of my dreams who was ever so calmly suggesting that I let him have at least the option to procreate with me one more time. I found this incredibly endearing and a great compliment. Tru
