My Daughter Is in China
Adopting After Infertility
By Michele St. Martin
But that doesn't really matter. She will look like herself. And it won't be long before we know what that means: all of our paperwork to make a Chinese orphan our daughter will arrive in Beijing within a few days. By the time you read this, it will likely be there, and we'll start waiting. There's so much waiting in infertility treatment that you'd think that we would be used to it, but it's still hard.
I'm going to take a quilting class so that I can make my future daughter a quilt. I can't even sew, so this will be quite an achievement! Jonathan is going to learn to make decorative shelves for the walls of the baby's room, something he's never done, either. Together we're going to decorate the baby's room, make a will, choose a college fund, take an infant CPR class, learn more about China. I could go on forever about everything we want to accomplish before we bring our baby home next spring or summer.
When friends ask, as they inevitably do, why we've chosen to adopt from China, we discuss the many factors in our decision and why adopting a baby halfway around the world is the right choice for us. And then we tell them the truth: because it's where our daughter is.
