All About the First Trimester

By Teri Brown

Pages:  1  2  3

Perhaps during no other time in a woman's life are the physical changes so rapid and so pervasive as during the first trimester of pregnancy. For Heather Truett of Brandon, Miss., the changes were obvious almost immediately.

"I was getting ready for bed," says Truett. "My husband happened to catch a glimpse of me and said, 'Honey, I am not saying you are fat, but are you pregnant?' Of course, I brushed him off as being silly. I could not possibly look pregnant. But, the suggestion tugged at my brain until I went and got a test the next day. Sure enough, I was pregnant with our second child."

Those changes begin practically at the moment of conception and just keep on coming.

The Hormones Made Me Do It!
Dr. Brad Imler is the president of the American Pregnancy Association, a national health organization committed to promoting reproductive and pregnancy wellness through education, research and community awareness. He says hormones rule the show from the start and create the catalyst for all other physical and emotional changes.

"The moment of implantation is key," says Dr. Imler. "That is when the hormone hCG (pregnancy hormone) becomes apparent in a woman's body. This varies in each woman and can take from two to 10 days after conception. You will not get a positive result from a pregnancy test until that implantation has occurred."

Once the fetus has implanted itself in the wall of the uterus, the hCG pregnancy hormone doubles every two days, which is why it is best to wait until you miss your period before taking a pregnancy test. You can actually take a pregnancy test four days before your missed period, but you may get what Dr. Imler calls a false negative because you may not yet have enough pregnancy hormone in your system to give a positive result.

Keep having mild cramping. I'm at the end of week 6. I know this is normal but once you miscarrage it is still bothersome!!
