The Facts to Relax
How to Cope with the Stress of Infertility
By Gwen Morrison
Domar holds "infertility retreat weekends," as well as operating the very popular 10-week, group sessions for women with infertility issues. Women and couples come to the retreats from all over the country to learn stress management strategies.
Tools to combat stress and promote relaxation include deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, yoga, exercise and a variety of other techniques. (As always, it is best to discuss these techniques with your physician before beginning a relaxation program.)
Domar explains that when you elicit the relaxation response by implementing one or more of the described relaxation methods, your heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rates decrease. "You feel more relaxed and less anxious," she says. "Individuals who elicit the relaxation response on a regular basis report that they not only feel more relaxed and less anxious during the actual relaxation, but also feel calmer throughout the day."
Though the mind/body approach to medicine is a fairly new phenomenon in the United States, it has been established in scientific literature that our emotional states impact the quality of our health.
