Tubal Ligation Reversal

Motherhood Reborn with a Reversed Tubal Ligation

A surgeon likes to see fallopian tubes that have very minimal damage, are not too short and are healthy. But even if the fallopian tubes have extensive damage and are short, a reversal may still be successful.

A Pricey Process
The reversal procedure is done under general anesthesia. The cost varies greatly because of anesthesia, hospital and post-op bills, but ranges from about $7,000 to $15,000. Some women conceive in their first post-op cycle, but the average length of time for conception is about six months. Success rates vary. The common rate is about 50 to 65 percent, but rates have been reported as high as 98 percent in some clinics.

There is a slight risk of ectopic pregnancy when a woman has her tubal reversed. Most of the time, the two ends of the fallopian tube that need to be joined are not the same shape and size. If the connection is not a smooth one, the fertilized egg can get caught at the surgical site, creating an ectopic pregnancy – which is life threatening to the mother and always results in a lost pregnancy. Finding the right surgeon is important.

Technological advances in fertility restoration are an incredible blessing for those who have a change of heart about their family size. Now, more than any other time in history, couples who once thought they could never have another baby are meeting an age where creating life really is a science.

So true. I did the operation at 21 with my second child. Divorced my husband a year later, and now at 33 have remarried a wonderful man, and will love to have a child with him.
