Is It Baby Time?
Confessions of a Biological Clock
By Gina Roberts-Grey
Money Matters
The stress of holding out for financial security, a promotion at work or a degree can be a powerful contraceptive. Financial worries tend to be at the top of the list of reasons that couples can't agree on when to begin trying to conceive or adopt. Children require a consistent supply of everything from diapers and clothing to new sneakers and spare glue sticks. "We knew that unless we won the lottery, we'd never have 'enough' money for children," says Lisa Jaeger of Baldwinsville, N.Y. "We made the decision to reduce some of our spending habits in order to afford what a child would need."
If you're hitting the snooze button on your biological clock, make sure that it's for a logical and realistic reason. "Many blame the fear of becoming a parent or their lack of parental readiness on finances," says fertility counselor Alyse Mitchell. Guiding hundreds through the process of conceiving, Mitchell urges prospective parents to accurately identify their fears, goals and concerns.
Gender-specific Clocks
When Elizabeth Mlotkiewicz of Wichita, Kan., was preparing for motherhood, she quickly realized that many men and women do not have the same sense of conception or parenting urgency. "Never having monthly cramps precludes men from understanding the physical reminder that they still aren't pregnant," she says. "They can't feel the cramps that remind you of how empty your womb is."Want to see more?
