Is It Baby Time?

Confessions of a Biological Clock

By Gina Roberts-Grey

Most hopeful parents want to celebrate their commitment to each other and share in the joys and occasional frustrations of raising a child. Others want to pour love and affection into an extension of themselves or their beloved partner. "There are instances when couples believe having a child will 'save' their relationship or fill a void in their lives," says Atwood. Interpreting your needs and expectations will help you tell time on your biological clock.

Opposite Sides of the Fence
Many couples unexpectedly find themselves questioning whether they should have a baby. "Even though we talked about this before we were married, now that the time we agreed on is here, suddenly he's not sure," says Brianna Hill of Alpharetta, Ga.

A unified parental front is just as essential in conceiving and preparing for a child as it is in raising him or her. "You're in this together," says Atwood. "If the timing is wrong for either of you, then it is wrong for you as a couple."

Talking with each other, trusted friends, clergy or a therapist provides clarity into each other's fears and feelings. "Often concerns about parental abilities or money hold many back from taking a decisive step toward parenting," Atwood says. Reassurance in each other's abilities and in your commitment to each other as partners also adds a necessary layer when trying to decipher the timing of your biological clock.
