Decisions, Decisions: Thinking About Pregnancy

Which Parenting Path Is Right for You?

Dunn enjoys time for herself now that the kids are self-sufficient. "I'm not old yet," she says, laughing. "Most of my hours are filled with 'me' stuff, and I am young enough to enjoy that, but I do feel out of place at times, especially with my kids' friends' parents who are much older than I am."

Later in Life
Ana Beckett, a 49-year-old former attorney from Tampa, Fla., couldn't decide if she ever wanted to get pregnant. "We would think about it, start making lists and master plans, but I always pushed it off," she says. "My husband didn't mind one way or the other. He just wanted me to be happy."

At 45, Beckett realized that being a mom would make her happy. "I was scared to death that I had waited too long, that I wouldn't be able to conceive because of my age," she says.

Beckett is now the mother of a 1-year-old girl. "Some people my age have no trouble getting pregnant, but we had to have help in order to conceive," she says. "It was a physically and emotionally draining process. I am still amazed that we survived it. My husband looks at the whole process with much kinder eyes. He says it was good practice for parenthood!"

20/20 Hindsight: "Sometimes I feel too old to be Cassie's mom," Beckett says. "I bet people think I'm her grandmother. Maybe that's self-imposed. No matter, I think about that a lot."

Regrets? Beckett is painfully honest. "Oh sure! I have regrets," she says. "I should have started sooner. Three. I think I would have liked three children. I won't have any more. Not beyond 50. Who knows if I even could? That makes me sad. I absolutely have regrets."
