Considering Pregnancy Later in Life

What's Stopping You from Becoming a Mother?

By Judy Molland

While this couple seems to have made the perfect choice, Whitham advises that not all couples are the same. "If a man marries a woman who already has older children, there's a wonderful opportunity for a great marriage, without the extra stress of [new] children," she says. "Babies can wreak havoc on coupledom, as the partners' time together gets sacrificed. I like to suggest to couples in that situation that they borrow some young children for a week, and see what it's really like!"

She adds that she does have clients who have had children later in life, and have found parenting to be wonderful. "It's a very personal decision – different for everybody," Whitham says.

Pregnant Pause
Once her son Matthew was almost 10 years old, Judy Clarke of London, England, found herself missing the baby stage, wishing she could have a little one again. "We decided to have another child, and it's been wonderful!" she says. "We spent a lot of time with Matt, assuring him that he was special, because he would always be the oldest."

She and her husband, David, also bought a book designed to show children how babies grow, so that Matt could experience the pregnancy in his way, too. "He was interested sometimes, and then he'd go off with his friends, just like a regular 10-year-old," says Clark. "But when the baby was born, Matt was the first visitor in the room to see his new sister. And he really did adore her from the beginning."
